Madison’s data center regulations take shape
Madison is developing regulations for large and hyperscale data centers as the city’s one-year moratorium on new facilities approaches expiration. Proposed rules would classify facilities by size and guide siting, with industrial areas on the far east and southeast sides identified as likely locations.
The City of Madison is preparing a regulatory framework for data centers ahead of the expiration of its one-year moratorium on new facilities. The moratorium was adopted to give city planners time to establish rules governing the location and scale of future developments.
The proposed framework would divide data centers into small, medium and large categories based on square footage. Industrial areas on Madison’s far east and southeast sides appear to be the most likely areas for large facilities under the emerging regulations.
