The Allen Park Planning Commission in Michigan is preparing for its third review of a proposed 26-megawatt data center project by Solstice Data, planned for a vacant site on Enterprise Drive. The proposal has repeatedly drawn large crowds of concerned residents and environmental activists to City Hall, who voice fears over potential noise and air pollution, as well as increased burden on the city's water and electrical infrastructure. Opponents also raise health concerns, describing the data centers as "untested" technology.
Solstice Data officials have countered these concerns, emphasizing the facility's role in meeting the escalating demand for artificial intelligence services. While nearby communities like Southfield and Lyon Township have approved similar data center developments, other cities, such as Taylor, have implemented moratoriums to allow for a comprehensive review of existing ordinances. An Allen Park official reportedly deemed a moratorium "not advisable" while the current proposal remains pending before the commission.
