During the public comment period, resident Hoogland argued that Iowa's 60% wind power capacity makes it a suitable location for bitcoin miners, suggesting they would be powered by renewable energy. However, Dave Diebler expressed significant concerns about the city potentially losing control and the substantial power demands of such facilities, stating, "What really concerns me is losing control of our city." Diebler also worried about the potential for large taxpayers to disproportionately influence policy.
Following the vote, Mayor Danny Laudick mentioned that the issue might be referred for future discussion. He also indicated that the American Planning Association is expected to provide more definitive information and descriptions regarding cryptocurrency mining facilities and data centers, which could inform future decisions.
