Advocates encourage resident-run gathering ahead of North Port meetings

The City Commission plans to discuss the moratorium on August 31, with a second reading scheduled for September 8, while also holding an informational workshop with experts from FPL and the local water authority.
North Port residents are actively organizing ahead of critical city meetings concerning data center development. The Team North Port Citizens Action Network (CAN), led by Robin San Vicente, is holding preparatory gatherings to educate residents and equip them with informed talking points and proper decorum for upcoming City Commission meetings.
The City Commission is slated to discuss a potential 18-month moratorium on data center construction on August 31, with a second reading on the issue scheduled for September 8. This comes after commissioners previously voted to continue conversations about such a moratorium. Residents are being encouraged to attend city workshops on September 3, where representatives from Florida Power & Light (FPL) and the Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority will provide factual information on topics like energy and water use. However, San Vicente expressed concerns about the city's approach, suggesting the information might be biased.
Team North Port CAN, which recently held a meeting attended by over 160 people, plans to distribute "no data centers" yard signs and hand paddles. City officials, including Communications Manager Jason Bartolone, have assured the public that there are contingency plans for seating and live streaming to accommodate a large turnout for public comments.
