The proposal stems from concerns that data centers can generate significant noise and place substantial demands on local resources, including water and electricity. If approved, the moratorium would allow town leaders and staff to gather crucial information regarding potential environmental impacts and to formulate suitable restrictions, while also ensuring that smaller business-related data facilities are not inadvertently affected. Mayor Will Haynie previously indicated that this moratorium is intended to prevent large-scale, hyperscale data centers from establishing a presence in Mount Pleasant, as the town currently lacks specific zoning regulations to prohibit them.
