Clinton Township to draft data center regulations
Clinton Township, Pennsylvania, is beginning a 180-day curative amendment process to add data center rules to its zoning ordinance. The process temporarily prevents developers from submitting data center proposals while the township drafts the new regulations, effectively creating a short-term moratorium.
Clinton Township officials in Butler County, Pennsylvania, agreed to use the municipal curative amendment process to develop zoning regulations for data centers, which are not currently addressed in the township’s ordinance. The planning commission has 180 days to draft the amendment, during which developers cannot submit data center proposals in the township.
Township solicitor John Bench said the Pennsylvania Municipal Planning Code permits a temporary pause when an emerging land use is not covered by existing zoning rules. Supervisor Jason Davidek said the township had received no data center applications as of Oct. 26 and described the measure as a bridge until the new ordinance is adopted. Adams, Center, Lancaster and Buffalo townships in Butler County are undertaking similar reviews.
