Democratic congressional candidate James Martin, campaigning for Florida’s 21st Congressional District, highlighted rising costs and clean water as his primary concerns in his bid to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Brian Mast. Martin, a fourth-generation Floridian and U.S. Coast Guard veteran, emphasized issues directly affecting voters in the Treasure Coast and northern Palm Beach County.
Among his environmental priorities, Martin advocates for a several-year moratorium on large AI data centers. He expressed apprehension about the potential impacts of these facilities on local water usage, noise levels, and the long-term efficacy of tax incentives. He specifically stated, "I don’t want to have paved over wild Florida on the promise that we’re going to receive 20 years’ worth of tax benefits and a bunch of jobs when those never materialize." This proposed pause would allow local governments to thoroughly study these effects.
Additionally, Martin outlined broader environmental goals, including reducing Lake Okeechobee discharges, completing Everglades restoration, and continuing septic-to-sewer conversions. He also addressed the cost of living, supporting the repeal of certain tariffs, federal action on Florida’s property-insurance crisis, and restoring Affordable Care Act subsidies.
