Seneca Lake reaches unusually low level as Pure Waters ends weekly updates
Seneca Lake has reached an unusually low water level, with an ongoing gate leak contributing to the decline and one harmful algal bloom reported. Separately, Torrey residents will hold a public forum about the proposed Vulcan AI data center at the former Greenidge facility, focusing on potential air and water quality and public health impacts.
Seneca Lake reached 444.09 feet BCD on Oct. 9, reaching a level comparable to last year’s seasonal low more than a month early. The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association attributed about 8 inches of the decline to an ongoing gate leak and reported one harmful algal bloom during the week of Oct. 2-8. Monitoring data was limited because a Finger Lakes Institute buoy was offline, so the update relied on volunteer observations and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data.
The article also notes that Torrey residents will host an Oct. 13 public forum in Penn Yan on the proposed Vulcan AI data center at the former Greenidge facility. The discussion will address potential effects on air and water quality, public health and surrounding communities, with residents invited to ask questions and share concerns.
