INDIANA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — The former Homer City Generating Station site is set to become the largest gas-fired power plant and AI data center in the nation. President Trump highlighted the multi-billion-dollar project, which aims to replace the decommissioned coal plant's power with a natural gas facility featuring seven turbines. The project promises to boost local power output and support data centers and homes. Gov. Josh Shapiro emphasized the importance of increasing power grid outputs without burdening Pennsylvanians. The development is expected to bring thousands of jobs to Indiana County, with Sen. Joe Pittman noting, "This is an opportunity for us to turn that tide, and we need to ultimately embrace it." However, concerns remain about the lack of state legislation regulating data centers. Attorney Tim Burns is working on an ordinance to address potential impacts on local resources. State Rep. Jamie Walsh has proposed bills to regulate AI data center development, aiming for transparency and community involvement.
