A public hearing was held in Indianapolis concerning a proposed $2.2 billion data center development by DC BLOX on the city's east side, at the former Ford plant location. Reporter Ella Roach from the Department of Metropolitan Development hearing stated that the hearing examiner recommended approving the petition request for a variance of use, which would allow DC BLOX to proceed with the project. This decision was met with immediate, vocal opposition, leading to several individuals being ejected from the meeting.
The proposed data center, situated near Fintail Drive and Kitley Avenue, bordering the Irvington neighborhood and backing onto the Peny Trail, would comprise three buildings totaling approximately 420,000 square feet. Local residents voiced significant concerns during the hearing, citing potential environmental impacts, a decrease in property values, and the proximity of the facility to an elementary school. Several city councilors also spoke regarding these community concerns.
Despite the local opposition, the hearing examiner's recommendation moves the project forward. The ultimate decision now rests with the Metropolitan Development Commission, which will hold a larger meeting for the final approval of DC BLOX's data center plans.
