Western Wisconsin Residents Rally Against Data Center Development
Hundreds of Western Wisconsin residents gathered in Eau Claire to protest data center development in their region, citing concerns over environmental impact, water and energy consumption, and lack of regulation for AI. The event featured activists and public figures advocating for stronger local control and stricter regulatory oversight, highlighting a past success in Menomonie where community opposition led to more onerous zoning rules and blocked a proposed project.
More than 500 residents from Western Wisconsin converged in Eau Claire for the "Uniting Western Wisconsin" event, a major demonstration of opposition to AI data center development in the region. Organized by groups including Grassroots Organizing Western Wisconsin and Chippewa Valley Indivisible, attendees voiced strong concerns regarding the environmental impact on land, water, and air, the significant energy demands of data centers, and the broader societal implications of artificial intelligence without adequate regulation.
The event featured speeches from prominent anti-data center activists and a performance by comedian Charlie Berens, who advocated for increased regulatory authority for the state's Department of Natural Resources. Organizers, referencing a successful campaign in Menomonie where local opposition led to new restrictive zoning rules and the cancellation of a data center project, emphasized the importance of local control and urged political candidates in the upcoming election to seriously address community concerns about hyperscale data center proposals and protective measures for communities.
