Test Failures Show How Data Centers Could Destabilize the Texas Power Grid

Several large Texas data centers and crypto mining facilities have failed key reliability tests, raising concerns about potential destabilization of the Texas power grid. Texas' grid operator has reported that several large data centers and crypto mining facilities in Texas failed key reliability tests in anticipation of the upcoming summer peak. This situation is prompting significant concerns about potential destabilizing events on the state's power grid.

Unlike many traditional energy consumers, data centers are typically designed to disconnect from the grid during voltage disturbances to protect their equipment. However, this design can lead to an oversupply of power to other consumers, thereby intensifying the negative effects of voltage disturbances across the grid.

During a recent routine test of voltage disturbance resistance, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) observed four clusters of large electricity consumers, including data centers, abruptly disconnecting. According to ERCOT, each of these clusters could trigger more than 5,000 megawatts of demand tripping, which is roughly equivalent to the power load of a major city such as El Paso.

ERCOT data indicates that since 2023, there have been 26 identified events where data centers and crypto mining facilities abruptly disconnected from the Texas power grid during voltage disturbances.
