US tech companies turn to geothermal energy to power data centers

US technology giants like Google, Microsoft, and Meta are increasingly investing in geothermal energy projects, especially enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), to power their data centers. This strategic shift is driven by the surging electricity demand from AI and cloud computing, alongside a commitment to reduce carbon emissions. US technology giants, including Google, Microsoft, and Meta, are significantly increasing their investments in geothermal energy projects to power their data centers. This trend is driven by the escalating electricity demands of artificial intelligence and cloud computing, as well as a strategic focus on energy security and carbon emission reduction. Advances in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) are accelerating the sector's growth, offering a continuous and low-carbon power source that is not dependent on weather conditions, unlike solar and wind.

Google has already partnered with US-based Fervo Energy to utilize EGS-generated electricity at its data centers in Nevada. EGS technology allows for electricity generation by injecting water into hot rock formations, even without natural geothermal reservoirs. Microsoft is also prioritizing low-carbon baseload energy sources, including geothermal, for its data center expansion, monitoring projects in the US and New Zealand. Meta considers geothermal a complementary energy source alongside its existing solar and wind investments.

Ufuk Senturk, chairman of Türkiye's Geothermal Power Plant Investors Association (JESDER), highlighted the International Energy Agency's forecast that data centers will become a primary driver of global electricity demand. Senturk believes Türkiye is well-positioned to attract global investment in geothermal-powered data centers, citing its installed capacity, experienced investors, and technical infrastructure. He suggested that new data centers could be established near existing geothermal plants with long-term power purchase agreements, or new plants could be developed specifically for data center needs, potentially integrating AI technologies for operational optimization.
