Mayor Pro Tem Doug Capps dismissed social media criticism that the ban was unnecessary, highlighting a bypass that now borders 1,400 undeveloped acres. Capps noted that any developers seeking water and sewer services would need to annex into the city, making a ban a necessary preemptive step.
The draft ordinance, which draws definitions from Florida Statutes, asserts that data centers are "inherently contrary to the Comprehensive Plan and the city's position on conservation and preservation of natural resources." It also expresses concern over the "slow erosion of home rule" and aims to prevent future state preemption on such prohibitions. The ordinance is scheduled for a formal first reading at a future council meeting.
