Gov: Shelbyville City Council, Shelbyville Mayor Scott Ferguson
The Shelbyville City Council voted 4-2 to approve the annexation and zoning of 429 acres for a multibillion-dollar data center project, combining it with city-owned property to create a 575-acre site for up to 13 buildings. This decision was met with fierce pushback from community members. Shelbyville resident Connie Lindsay, who has lived in Shelby County for over 50 years, expressed that data centers do not benefit the community and will "damage the water, hurt the wildlife, and the farm." Mayor Scott Ferguson was unavailable for comment but issued a statement indicating that any future development on the site would require additional applications. Another resident, Hope Fenton, stated that the community feels unheard by the government, despite no data center signs being listed. Fenton also mentioned that residents are in the process of taking legal action against the government regarding the project.
