The WBIR Channel 10 reports on the opening of the Knoxville Police Department's new Real-Time Information Center. Opened just last week, this center acts as a central hub for police cameras, utilizing a network of both public and private surveillance cameras across the city.

The center's primary goal is to facilitate faster and safer responses to criminal activity. According to officials, the center has already contributed to solving two cases since its inception. The initiative is expanding with "Connect Knoxville," allowing residents to register their private cameras, providing police with knowledge of camera locations without accessing individual systems.

The facility is staffed by police officer supervisors and civilians, with plans to hire two more civilians. The information provided by these cameras offers officers crucial background on scenes before they arrive and aids in long-term investigations. The police department has installed 10 new city-run cameras, strategically placed based on three years of service calls and crime data.
