A recent nationwide poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found that nearly two-thirds of respondents oppose the construction of an AI data center in their community. The primary concerns cited were electricity costs, water usage, and noise, which outweighed potential benefits like job creation and increased tax revenue.
In Michigan, this sentiment resonates as Microsoft is reportedly considering building a data center on 272 acres near Dorr, along US-131 and 144th Avenue. Holland BPW General Manager Dave Koster acknowledged similar local interest in data center development.
In response to growing concerns, a three-bill package was introduced in the Michigan state House a month ago. These bills aim to enact a moratorium on data center construction until April 1st of the following year, providing local communities with time to assess the potential ramifications. However, the proposed legislation has been referred to the Committee on Government Operations, where its future remains uncertain, highlighting the ongoing debate surrounding data center expansion in the state.
