The meeting saw an overwhelming public response, with over 100 residents filling the Board of Supervisors chamber and more than 590 electronic comments submitted.
Commissioner Raymond stated her goal was to ensure Butte County understands its options and can explore potential ordinances before any specific data center proposal arrives. This proactive approach was informed by observing other communities' struggles to respond to such developments.
Despite officials clarifying that no formal proposal was currently under consideration, community members voiced strong opposition to AI data centers. Residents expressed concerns about significant risks, including threats to wildlife, ecosystems, native flora and fauna, and groundwater. Many speakers emphasized their desire to preserve the rural character of Northern California and urged a definitive 'no' to future data center developments.
