The Piqua Commission has tabled an ordinance regarding a 40-year electricity franchise agreement with AES Ohio, which would supply power to a planned data center at Washington and Farrington Roads, operated by J5 LLC. The ordinance, designated O-7-26, was scheduled for its third reading when Commissioner Frank DeBrosse moved to table it, citing Section 106 of the city Charter which requires an adequate public hearing for franchise ordinances. DeBrosse emphasized the strong public interest generated by the proposal, suggesting that a dedicated public hearing would allow for community feedback and clarify any misunderstandings.
Mayor Jim Vetter supported the motion, which was unanimously approved by the commission. Piqua Law Director Jessica Stiltner clarified that the ordinance could be amended following the hearing, but any significant changes would require further readings and publication before a final vote. The public hearing on the AES ordinance is now scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, at 6 p.m. in the Piqua Commission Chambers, where citizens will have the opportunity to express their concerns. The commission aims to untable the ordinance for a third reading and potential vote during their next regularly scheduled meeting in the third week of August, following the public input.
