Detroit City Council member Gabriela Santiago-Romero is seeking an 18-month pause on permits for new principal-use AI data centers as the city develops a regulatory framework. She asked council attorneys to draft an interim zoning measure that would extend the pause through March 2028.

Detroit planners are separately preparing zoning rules covering data center infrastructure and environmental impacts. Mayor Mary Sheffield's administration says permits have effectively been paused while the rules are considered, but the city has not formally adopted the moratorium requested by the council member.
