Opposition continues for Platte County's planning and zoning board
The Platte County Planning & Zoning Commission meeting saw public opposition regarding both a communications tower permit and potential future data center regulations. The board approved the tower permit and is considering permitting language for future data center applications. Platte County commissioners will make final decisions on rule-making updates this Thursday.
The Platte County Planning & Zoning Commission board meeting on August 11 was met with significant public opposition concerning a conditional-use permit for a 104-foot Rocky Mountain communications tower and the discussion of potential regulations for future data center projects.
County Planner Laura Bookout presented the tower proposal, recommending approval with eight standard conditions, which the board ultimately granted despite continued arguments from both sides regarding its legality and procedural aspects. The meeting then shifted to the topic of data center zoning, with the board clarifying that no official application had been made but they aimed to establish permitting conditions preemptively.
Residents voiced concerns about tax exemptions, water use, and regulatory loopholes, highlighting a theme of public mistrust versus procedural constraints. The Platte County commissioners are scheduled to meet on August 19 to finalize decisions on the Rocky Mountain tower and discuss rule-making updates and by-law revisions presented by Ms. Bookout. A public hearing is also set for September 16 at the Agriplex.
