The city of Salix, Iowa, is facing significant community opposition over a proposed 900-acre data center project by MidAmerican. Residents have expressed serious concerns about the project's large scale, potential noise, and dust during construction, prompting Mayor Kevin Nelson to publicly address the city's annexation timeline.

At a recent Salix City Council meeting, 70 residents submitted signatures advocating for an emergency moratorium on data center construction. This followed the council's unanimous vote to approve the voluntary annexation of 900 acres, a process Mayor Nelson stated adhered to Iowa law. Councilman Gene Monk explicitly moved for a moratorium, urging his colleagues not to rezone the property for data center development.

In response to the community's outcry, the Salix City Council voted 3-2 to advance a temporary data center moratorium. The city attorney will now draft the official language for this moratorium, which is slated for a final council vote on August 12. Mayor Nelson acknowledged the community's concerns but indicated he had not received additional information from MidAmerican beyond initial discussions.
