Developers of a proposed artificial intelligence data center in Bonner, Montana, have informed Missoula County that the facility, operated by Krambu, could ultimately consume up to 100 megawatts upon full build-out. Initially, Krambu had stated the development would start at 3 megawatts, later clarifying that the site currently has capacity for 29 megawatts, with potential for growth over two to three years depending on power availability and market demand. Dobler Engineering, contracted by Krambu, noted in county filings that a 100 MW facility would be an average-sized data center.
The project is currently undergoing a special zoning review, and Missoula County planner Jennie Dixon has requested additional information from Krambu on potential noise, visual, water, and heat impacts, indicating insufficient data for a favorable recommendation to the Land Use Board. The earliest a special exception review hearing could occur is July 1. County regulations necessitate Krambu to secure renewable energy and manage electronic waste. The company proposes a closed-loop water cooling system, estimated to use 2,000 gallons annually, involving evaporative cooling towers. While Krambu does not plan for regular on-site staffing or a backup power generator, it proposes street trees to mitigate construction impact.
Community opposition is evident, with a Change.org petition urging the county to reject the permits having garnered approximately 2,400 signatures.
