Minnesota Power has formally presented details of its agreement with Google for a proposed data center in Hermantown. The deal outlines the use of existing regulated rate structures and stipulates that Google will cover the costs of any new infrastructure required to connect the facility to the grid. Additionally, the plan includes approximately 700 megawatts of renewable energy and battery storage, along with a $5 million contribution from Google towards energy affordability and efficiency programs.
The presentation, delivered at both pre-agenda and regular meetings, was met with mixed reactions from local residents. Eleanor Dolan, a member of the "Stop the Data Center" group, voiced significant environmental concerns, stating that an amended environmental review (AUAR) is insufficient. Her group is advocating for a more comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) review, emphasizing the need to slow down the process to ensure thorough environmental assessments.
Conversely, supporters of the project also attended the meetings. Nate Rickard of the Duluth Building Trades expressed strong support, highlighting the potential for an eight-year union project that would create numerous jobs for local construction workers and skilled trades in the area.
The agreement is not yet finalized, as it requires review and approval by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. This will initiate a public process, allowing residents and other stakeholders to provide further input before a final decision is made.
