Nevada Teachers' Union Proposes Ending Data Center Tax Breaks
Nevada's largest teachers' union, the Clark County Education Association, is pushing for an end to data center sales tax abatements. They propose restructuring these tax incentives to generate up to $500 million annually for K-12 public schools. The union is working to add this proposal to the 2027 legislative agenda.
The Clark County Education Association (CCEA), Nevada's largest teachers' union, has unveiled an eight-point plan aimed at restructuring tax incentives for data centers. The core of their proposal calls for ending the 2.6% local school support sales tax (LSST) abatement currently granted to data centers, a move they claim could generate as much as $500 million annually for K-12 public schools across the state.
CCEA Executive Director John Vellardita emphasized that the opportunity to redefine the relationship with the data center industry is too significant to ignore. He confirmed that his office is collaborating with state lawmakers to incorporate this proposal into the 2027 legislative agenda. However, such a tax and spending bill would require bipartisan support, needing a two-thirds majority to pass.
