Google is seeking to significantly expand its Fort Wayne, Indiana data center campus by applying for an air quality permit modification to add 228 emergency generators. This is the third such modification requested by developer Hatchworks LLC to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, building on previous approvals for over 170 diesel-powered generators. The global tech giant plans a $2 billion investment across 12 buildings on an 892-acre site, with the data center having begun operations in December.
The project has faced public contention, prompting the Fort Wayne City Council to consider a one-year temporary moratorium on new data center proposals during its upcoming Tuesday session. The council will also debate establishing a task force to guide future large-scale developments. Earlier this month, Google also received state permits to fill over two acres of wetlands at the site.
