North Platte Planning Commission reviews comprehensive plan updates, new data center zoning regulations
The North Platte Planning Commission unanimously recommended rezoning for a car wash and reviewed extensive updates to the city's comprehensive plan and zoning regulations. These proposed updates include new sections specifically addressing data centers, which are expected to generate significant public comment. The city council will consider the car wash rezoning on Sept. 1 and will hold public hearings on the comprehensive plan updates, including data center regulations, in the coming months.
The North Platte Planning Commission held a meeting where two main items were discussed: a rezoning request for a proposed Tommy's Express car wash and the first formal draft of significant updates to the city s comprehensive plan and zoning regulations. The commission unanimously recommended approval for the car wash rezoning, which would replace an existing motel at the northeast corner of Philip Ave. and Dewey St. Operator Ben Conover presented details about the car wash's capacity and traffic management plans, addressing commissioners' concerns about potential traffic congestion, particularly during opening promotions.
In addition to the car wash proposal, the commission reviewed a comprehensive overhaul of North Platte's planning documents, which have been years in the making. Planning Director Judy Clark highlighted that the more than 200-page drafts include new sections specifically addressing data centers and medical cannabis establishments, as well as a special-events zoning district. Chairman David Fudge noted that the proposed data center regulations are likely to generate substantial public comment. The city is preparing for a joint city council and planning commission work session in September, with public hearings and votes on the comprehensive plan updates scheduled for October and November.
