Alan Cooper, CEO and co-founder of On.Energy, recently discussed the impact of Northern Virginia's growing data center industry on the electric grid during an interview with 7News in Arlington. Cooper explained that new infrastructure and grid protection systems are crucial for maintaining reliability amidst increasing electricity demand, particularly after a recent transmission failure briefly caused multiple data centers to disconnect from the system.
Cooper clarified that the disconnection occurred to protect sensitive equipment and resulted in modest impacts, mainly brief power flickers rather than widespread outages. He noted that the primary concern is not data centers connecting to the grid, but rather their sudden disconnection during periods of instability, which can complicate efforts to balance electricity supply and demand. Cooper commended regional grid operators and utilities for their extensive planning and technology in maintaining a reliable system.
According to Cooper, modern data centers are increasingly investing in technologies such as advanced battery storage and power management to lessen their grid impact during disturbances.
