Creekstone Energy, an AI infrastructure developer, recently announced a patent-pending technology named Gigawater, designed to produce 4,000 acre-feet of water annually from natural gas. The technology is the centerpiece of Project Oasis at the company's Delta Gigasite, currently under construction in Millard County, Utah, and aims to mitigate the significant water consumption associated with data centers. Natural gas for the process will be transported from Wyoming.

Ray Conley, founder and CEO of Creekstone Energy, explained the technology's principle, drawing a parallel to water condensing from car exhaust. The company asserts that the Gigawater process requires no external power sources and will make the Delta Gigasite facility not just water-neutral, but water-positive, with the recovered water potentially usable for irrigation, geothermal cycles, and even potable consumption after filtration.

However, the technology is currently theoretical. Creekstone Energy has partnered with the University of Utah for a two-phase project to verify the chemistry, thermodynamics, and conceptual design, with the first phase expected to take a year. Logan Mitchell, a climate scientist with Utah Clean Energy, expressed skepticism about the technology's broader impact, noting that 4,000 acre-feet is a minute fraction of Utah's statewide water supply and will not meaningfully change the overall water picture.

Despite the theoretical stage, Creekstone Energy hopes Gigawater will set a new standard for data center development in arid climates, demonstrating that economic growth and environmental stewardship can coexist. State Representative Jill Koford, R-Ogden, praised Creekstone's efforts as going "well beyond compliance" and aligning with Utah's legislative goals for water transparency and accountability in the data center industry.
