Woodbury County, Iowa, is initiating a series of special meetings to discuss and formulate regulations for data center developments within its unincorporated areas. The first of these meetings took place in Sloan, where the Woodbury County Zoning Commission sought public input on potential rules, including data center locations and application approval processes. Residents voiced concerns regarding the potential long-term, permanent changes that large data centers might impose on small communities, with one attendee noting the short useful life of technology and the potential for large facilities to become obsolete.
Dan Binger, a supervisor with the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, emphasized the need for mandatory agreements with data center developers. He argued that the county board and city councils must have a significant role in these discussions and that data or electrical companies should be required to front all associated costs, including build-out road structures and permitting, ensuring no financial burden falls on local citizens or the county.
