Petitions, lawsuit mount against the Global AI data center in Weld County
Residents and a Weld County opposition group have collected more than 10,000 signatures seeking to repeal county approval of Global AI’s proposed data center near Greeley and Windsor. An affiliate of BROE Real Estate Group also sued the county, alleging the project has not demonstrated adequate water and electricity supplies.
Opposition to Global AI’s proposed sovereign AI data center in Weld County has intensified after the POWER committee reported collecting about 11,000 signatures for petitions seeking to repeal the county’s approval and trigger a special election. Residents have cited potential impacts on water supplies, electricity rates and local resources, while Global AI says its closed-loop cooling system would use about 6,500 gallons of water annually and would not raise local electricity costs.
Windsor Renewal LLC, an affiliate of BROE Real Estate Group, filed a lawsuit against the Weld County Board of Commissioners, arguing that Global AI has not met county requirements for adequate water and electrical service. County Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes said officials will validate the signatures and determine whether to challenge the petitions or schedule a special election. Global AI remains committed to the project, which it plans to operate with Nvidia and Humain and which could generate an estimated $11.8 million in annual property taxes for Greeley if annexed into the city.
