Grassroots group launches Fort Meade recall petition targeting 3 city officials over AI data center project
A watchdog group in Fort Meade, Florida, launched a recall petition against three city officials for approving a controversial AI data center. The group also filed a lawsuit challenging the project's transparency and review process, citing concerns over water usage, noise, and traffic. Officials defend the project, while the recall effort and legal challenges continue.
A grassroots organization, Watchdogs of Fort Meade, has initiated a recall campaign against Fort Meade Mayor Jaret Williams, Vice Mayor Petrina McCutchen, and Commissioner Matthew Taylor. The group alleges mismanagement, malfeasance, and conflicts of interest surrounding the controversial approval of the Stonebridge hyperscale AI data center. This 4.4-million-square-foot facility, approved in April, has raised community concerns regarding water usage, noise pollution, health impacts, and increased traffic.
The recall effort follows a lawsuit filed by the Watchdogs in May against the city, challenging the project's approval due to alleged lack of transparency and lawful review. The group also requested an environmental review from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Commissioner Matthew Taylor defended his vote, citing national interests in AI development and questioning the opposition's funding. Organizers are currently collecting signatures for the recall petition, which will then be verified by the Polk County Supervisor of Elections.
