MidAmerican Energy Company has confirmed its involvement in evaluating a proposed data center development site near Salix, Iowa, within Woodbury County. This announcement comes amid significant community unrest, with nearly 100 residents filling the Salix City Hall chambers for the second time in a month, expressing anger and frustration over the lack of information regarding the project.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, residents raised questions about the data center's potential impact on agricultural, economic, and ecological resources. Salix Mayor Kevin Nelson confirmed that a necessary rezoning request for the project has not yet been presented to the city council, preventing council members from directly answering many of the residents' questions. This did little to alleviate public concerns.
Information shared with attendees highlighted potential benefits such as hundreds of construction jobs, new tax revenue, increased traffic for local businesses, and infrastructure improvements. MidAmerican Energy clarified that it would not operate the data center but would sell electricity to a future customer who would develop the site. Company representatives described the process as being in its "first inning," with more information expected once an end-user customer is selected. Mayor Nelson reiterated that the council would take no action until a rezoning request is formally presented.
