North Alabama resident Joshua Craig of Hazel Green voiced concerns regarding the proliferation of data centers across the Tennessee Valley. Craig expressed worry about the impact these facilities could have on nearby rural communities, specifically mentioning the extensive land consumption, often converting farmland.
He highlighted existing data center developments, including Google's site in Bridgeport, the approved Flatwoods Data Center in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and Meta's expanding facility in the Toney area, which is growing to approximately 2.5 million square feet. Craig fears that the rapid expansion of data centers, typically occupying between 100 to 1,000 acres, will lead to a scarcity of farmland and create a detrimental "ripple effect" across the local economy.
