Madison County excludes data centers from enterprise zone property tax incentives
The Madison County Board voted to exclude data centers from property tax abatements in the Southwestern Madison County Enterprise Zone. The action does not prohibit data center development, leaving zoning and development decisions to local municipalities while preserving tax revenue for local districts.
The Madison County Board voted Wednesday to remove data centers from the 10-year property tax abatement available for eligible improvements in the Southwestern Madison County Enterprise Zone. Board Chairman Chris Slusser said strong demand for data center sites means public incentives are unnecessary and that the change will protect revenue for local taxing districts.
The amendment affects projects in Granite City, Madison and Venice, while the separate Madison County Discovery Enterprise Zone allows individual taxing districts to decide whether to grant abatements. The county may pursue similar restrictions in other enterprise zones, but the action does not ban data centers or override municipal zoning authority. Communities may still consider developments and separate local tax incentives.
