Aurora City Council refuses to vote on temporary ban on data centers
The Aurora City Council voted 6-5 against reconsidering a proposed temporary moratorium on new data center applications, preventing the measure from coming to a vote. Mayor Mike Coffman said he will bring the proposal back at a future meeting, while the already-approved Trident data center would not be affected by any future moratorium.
The Aurora City Council declined to reconsider a proposed moratorium on new data center applications after a meeting that continued past midnight and included extensive public comment. The motion failed 6-5, meaning the temporary ban did not advance to a formal vote. The proposal would pause approval of new data center applications while the city develops additional regulations.
Mayor Mike Coffman previously voted against the moratorium but said his position changed after visiting the area where the proposed Trident data center would be built near Green Valley Ranch and nearby homes. Coffman said he intends to reintroduce the same motion at the next regular council meeting. The Trident project has already been approved and would proceed even if a moratorium is later adopted. Separately, Loveland officials planned a study session on data center impacts, although the city had no pending proposals.
