Childress, Texas, is experiencing a housing crisis, with residents reporting significant rent increases tied to the ongoing development of a new data center. Mayor Cary Preston addressed the concerns, stating that the city has limited options to intervene due to the rapid influx of 4,000 to 5,000 workers into the small community, much of the development occurring outside city limits.

The concerns escalated after residents of Madison Chase Apartments received letters indicating rent increases, with prices doubling to between $1,500 and $2,000 per month. These new rates are reportedly higher than average apartment prices in major Texas cities. Residents held a protest against the data center, arguing they are disproportionately bearing the cost of economic development they did not request.

While Mayor Preston expressed understanding for the residents' frustrations, he noted that the city's ability to regulate the situation is constrained. He acknowledged that the economic impact varies, benefiting business and property owners through increased sales taxes, but negatively affecting long-term residents facing displacement.
