During a special meeting, township consultant Andrew Schwartz of Environmental Planning and Design presented options, leading supervisors to pass a proposal to consider expanding the industrial zone to 534 acres along the Route 115 and Pennsylvania Turnpike corridor. This proposed zone, which encompasses 101 parcels, many residential, was chosen for its proximity to power and public water.
The decision follows an earlier "curative amendment" approved by supervisors, giving them 180 days to update zoning ordinances. While no specific data center proposals have been submitted, the move is a proactive measure to avoid legal issues.
Residents voiced strong concerns at the packed meeting, criticizing the rural character of Bear Creek Township for data centers and the rushed timeline for a vote just three days after a public hearing. A community meeting for concerned citizens is scheduled to discuss the issue further.
