The Box Elder County Commission in Utah unanimously approved a plan for a massive data center project, identified as the Stratus project, despite significant public outcry. Hundreds of protestors attended the meeting, expressing their disapproval with boos and chants of "shame," particularly after commissioners Lee Perry, Tyler Vincent, and Boyd Bingham announced there would be no public comment. The commissioners eventually threatened law enforcement action and moved the meeting to a virtual format.
The data center project is backed by TV personality and investor Kevin O'Leary of Shark Tank, and by the Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA). Residents voiced concerns about the environmental impact, specifically highlighting the scarcity of water in the area and fears that the project would cause further damage. Experts informed the commissioners that water at the proposed site is too salty for human consumption and that the facility would be powered by a natural gas line, necessitating compliance with air quality requirements.
The commission approved two resolutions. The first aimed to establish "guidelines, some guard rails in place" to protect Box Elder County citizens, acknowledging the state's lack of specific zoning laws. The second resolution formally accepted MIDA's operation within the county. Despite the clear division in the community, with some members displeased by the decision, commissioners also noted that others would be pleased.
