Spring City commissioners considering 2-year moratorium on data centers
Spring City, Tennessee, is considering a two-year moratorium on data centers, including AI and cryptocurrency facilities. The proposed ordinance passed its first reading and will have a final reading and public hearing on July 30. If enacted, it will halt all data center establishment, construction, expansion, and associated zoning approvals within the town limits.
The Town of Spring City, Tennessee, is actively pursuing a two-year moratorium on data center development, including facilities for artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency. The proposed ordinance successfully passed its initial reading on Thursday, July 16, and is scheduled for a second and final reading, coupled with a public hearing, on July 30.
Should the ordinance be enacted, it would immediately prohibit the establishment, construction, expansion, relocation, or operation of any new or existing data centers within Spring City's corporate limits. Furthermore, it would prevent town leaders from accepting, reviewing, processing, approving, or issuing any zoning or development plans related to data centers during the moratorium period. Mayor Lassetter has indicated that rezoning would likely be a prerequisite for any such projects to advance.
