Meta's data center in Kuna, Idaho, is now officially operational. The facility emphasizes its efficient water usage through a closed-loop cooling system and its reliance on renewable energy sources. The Meta Data Center in Kuna, Idaho, is officially operational as of September 3, according to a report by KTVB. The 750,000 square foot facility, described as comparable to three football fields in length, has been a significant industrial development for Kuna and the Treasure Valley region.
Scott Stillings, representing Meta, highlighted the center's commitment to environmental efficiency. He explained that the facility utilizes a closed-loop cooling system, requiring minimal water for the majority of the year, similar to a car radiator. Additionally, every bit of energy consumed at the Kuna Data Center is offset by renewable sources like wind and solar power. Earlier in the development process, Meta reportedly redesigned the facility to use significantly less water, a decision that Mayor Joe Steer credited to collaboration and resident input.
Beyond environmental considerations, Meta has also invested substantially in the local community. The company contributed $200,000 to Kuna schools and spent $100 million on building out water and wastewater systems for the city, which is expected to support future growth. Meta has also provided over $1.5 million to Ada County schools and nonprofits and launched a "Future is for Everyone" fund for data center communities, with a goal of achieving full renewable power and water net positivity by 2030.
The project created 1,600 construction jobs and is expected to have around 100 operational jobs. Concerns about noise pollution were addressed, with reporters noting that outside the fence, the noise was minimal. Mayor Steer expressed satisfaction with Meta's performance, stating that the company has fulfilled its promises and been a great community partner.
