Erie County Council has postponed a crucial vote on an amendment to the subdivision and land development ordinance (SALDO) concerning data centers. The decision to table the vote, made unanimously by the council, aims to allow the planning commission more time to revise the proposed regulations. This revision will incorporate concerns raised during a recent public hearing and align the ordinance with Governor Josh Shapiro's recently issued executive order.
Council members, including Councilman Chris Drexel, emphasized the importance of "getting it right" and ensuring all relevant concerns are addressed before a final decision. Specific restrictions being revisited include those related to data center borders and limits on low-frequency noise. The director of planning has been asked to consult with the planning commission to review best practices and incorporate public comments. The next Erie County Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for October 8th.
