Forsyth County commissioners deny rezoning request that would include data center in Rural Hall

Forsyth County Commissioners have voted to deny a rezoning request that would have facilitated the construction of a large hyperscale data center in Rural Hall. The decision came after months of deliberation, numerous public hearings, and nearly 400 unique comments from residents, reflecting passionate pleas from both proponents and opponents of the project.

Community members expressed significant concerns about the proposed data center, highlighting potential environmental impacts, noise pollution, and the strain on local water resources, ultimately affecting their quality of life. One resident living two football fields from the proposed site stated, "I don't want it there. I got grandkids to come and play."

Commissioners emphasized their commitment to listening to the community, with some clarifying they were not inherently against data centers but wanted to ensure they were built in appropriate locations. One commissioner noted, "There are other suitable locations in the county for a project like this." Proponents, including developers, argued the data center would represent a massive and reliable addition to the county's tax base.

The final vote was 4 to 3 against the rezoning request. The landowners, the Wall family, retain the right to sell or use their property, currently farmland, for its intended use or pursue other development options. The decision signifies a victory for local opposition focused on preserving community character and addressing specific environmental and quality-of-life issues.
