Microsoft proposes 30-foot sound wall near incoming Granger data center
Microsoft is proposing a 30-foot sound wall around the north side of its data center under construction in Granger to address nearby residents’ concerns about noise and vibrations. The proposal, which requires a variance, is scheduled for consideration by the St. Joseph County Board of Zoning Appeals.
Microsoft has proposed building a 30-foot sound wall along the north side of its data center under construction in Granger, Indiana. The wall would run parallel to the Indiana Toll Road between Currant Road and Bittersweet Road and could reduce noise by an estimated 13.5 to 16.5 decibels.
St. Joseph County Economic Development Director Bill Schalliol said Microsoft initiated the proposal after hearing community concerns and that the county supports the effort. Some nearby residents remain worried about the facility’s future noise levels, while others say the existing toll road is already a larger source of sound. The project is still several years from completion, and the variance request is scheduled to go before the St. Joseph County Board of Zoning Appeals.
