Community continues to push back vs. data center
The El Paso community, led by Amanecer People's Project, is actively opposing Meta's data center project in Northeast El Paso due to environmental and economic concerns. The El Paso City Council will discuss canceling Meta's tax-incentive agreement, a move that city officials warn could lead to significant legal challenges.
Community members in El Paso, Texas, are continuing their fight against a controversial Meta data center slated for Northeast El Paso. The Amanecer People's Project recently hosted a public comment workshop to educate participants on previous city council discussions and present their findings regarding the data center's potential environmental and economic impacts, including concerns over energy, pollution, and water usage. The workshop also guided attendees on how to provide public comment to the city council. An organizer noted strong community opposition following March town-hall meetings that drew nearly 400 people.
This coming Tuesday, the El Paso City Council is scheduled to discuss an item, introduced by City Representatives Josh Acevedo and Lily Limon, aimed at initiating the process to cancel the city's tax-incentive agreement with Meta. This agreement was originally approved in 2023.
However, the City Manager and City Attorney have issued a joint statement cautioning that terminating the economic incentive agreement would likely lead to significant legal challenges for the city.
