Gov. Abbott orders audit of data center projects seeking connection to Texas power grid
Governor Greg Abbott has ordered Texas energy regulators to conduct a comprehensive audit of all data center projects seeking connection to the state's power grid. This audit, which will examine compliance with requirements and assess factors like electricity and water usage, must be completed before any new facilities are approved. The directive aims to protect grid reliability and Texans' quality of life amidst unprecedented demand from data centers.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the state's energy regulators to undertake a comprehensive audit of all data center projects seeking to connect to the Texas power grid. The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) are mandated to complete this review before any new facilities are granted approval, with non-compliant projects to be denied grid access.
Governor Abbott emphasized that the audit's priority is to protect Texans' safety and quality of life, stating that projects must meet all established requirements. His office reported that ERCOT is currently reviewing requests for grid connection totaling over 474 gigawatts, with approximately 90% of these stemming from data center projects. This massive demand, more than five times the state's record peak, is identified as a potential threat to the electric grid's reliability.
Building on a June 10 directive, the governor has also instructed PUCT and ERCOT to collect additional details from each proposed data center. This includes information on state or local financial incentives, anticipated electricity and water consumption, plans for on-site power generation, and measures to mitigate impacts on surrounding communities.
The audit will further examine proposed water sources, cooling technologies, noise and traffic mitigation strategies, emergency response coordination, and project ownership. This thorough review must be finalized before any data center project can advance through ERCOT's interconnection process.
