Taunton officials are considering a 365-day moratorium on new data centers while the city reviews zoning, infrastructure, electricity and environmental impacts. VMD Industrial III says the proposed freeze could jeopardize a pending deal with a confidential technology tenant for its 50 John Hancock Road property.

The Taunton Municipal Council is scheduled to consider a one-year moratorium on new data centers, giving officials time to review zoning rules and assess infrastructure, electricity, water and environmental concerns. The proposed freeze would affect development at VMD Industrial III's 151,306-square-foot industrial property in the Myles Standish Industrial Park.

VMD development director Stephen Gallagher warned that the moratorium could eliminate a potential technology tenant and put a multimillion-dollar deal at risk. VMD says the proposed project would require 24 megawatts over two phases and has asked Mayor Shaunna O'Connell and city officials to exempt existing, code-compliant industrial buildings. Residents and officials from nearby communities have expressed support for further review, citing potential effects on local resources and neighborhoods.
