Sheboygan Offers Clarification on Data Center Speaker Series as Public Sentiment Opposes the Facilities

The City of Sheboygan has clarified the intent of its upcoming data center speaker series following considerable public opposition to data center development within the city. The series was initiated after the Common Council enacted a 12-month data center moratorium earlier this year. According to City Administrator Casey Bradley, the purpose of the series is to facilitate the development of comprehensive zoning code updates that will protect the City, rather than to advocate for or against any particular data center project.

The clarification was deemed necessary due to a strong negative reaction from residents, many of whom expressed firm opposition to the prospect of a data center in Sheboygan. Bradley underscored the City's commitment to transparency, community involvement, and providing accurate information. He noted that while the City cannot outright ban a lawful business type, it can impose regulations through zoning, highlighting the critical need for expert guidance in this process. The speaker series is scheduled to commence on September 9th, with Becky Valcq, President of Alliant Energy Wisconsin and former head of Data Center Services for the company, as a featured speaker.
