The Colorado Springs Planning Commission held an appeal hearing regarding a controversial proposed data center, referred to as "Project Taurus," on Monday night at the ENT Center for Performing Arts at UCCS. The venue was chosen to accommodate a large crowd, which included hundreds of residents passionate about the issue.
The proposed data center aims to move into the former Intel chip plant located on Garden of the Gods Road. Many residents expressed significant worry about the potential impacts of the project, leading to a highly charged atmosphere at the hearing with cheering, shouting, and even tears. Over 100 people signed up to speak against the data center, while approximately 15 spoke in support.
Attendees, including Sophie Thunberg, voiced skepticism regarding the project's purported benefits to the community, calling the presented advantages "completely erroneous" and not based on "fact or science." Conversely, supporters argued that the financial benefits the data center would bring to the city are substantial, suggesting it would contribute to funding for various public services such as education, law enforcement, parks, and roads. A decision from the commission was anticipated following the lengthy hearing.
