Community conversation continues at Murray City Council data center ordinance meeting
The Murray City Council held a special-called meeting and public hearing to review a draft ordinance regarding data centers. Community members advocated for more stringent regulations, with the amended ordinance set for a second reading on August 13.
The Murray City Council convened a special meeting and public hearing to discuss a draft ordinance pertaining to potential data centers. This session followed several planning commission meetings that resulted in a proposed ordinance being forwarded to the council.
During the meeting, the council reviewed the planning commission's draft and solicited public feedback on various amendments. Community members, including Tara Lynn Kallaher, actively participated, recommending modifications to ensure the ordinance regulates rather than invites data centers, with focuses on annual reports, permit renewals, and increased distance from wetlands. Kallaher submitted an 18-page document detailing her recommendations.
Concerns were raised by Brandy Valentine and other attendees regarding the meeting's 4 p.m. start time, two hours earlier than previous council meetings, which some felt unfairly limited public participation. The amended ordinance is scheduled for a second reading on August 13.
If adopted, the recommendations are expected to establish one of Kentucky's most comprehensive and protective data center ordinances.
